Our Mission
Zee’s goal is to promote getting a full eight hours of sleep every night for the good of college students’ precious mental and physical health in a manner that has the power to change a lifestyle, not just a mindset. Zee’s vision for the future will be achieved by demonstrating the practical benefits of sleep in the unique context of a college student’s life. We will be shedding light on the harmful effects of popular sleep detriments like caffeine or social stress. Zee’s is imperative to the well-being of young adults, and is the key to success in all their endeavors.

The Problem
The current problem that college students face is having a schedule that does not allow for a healthy amount of sleep, and the negative reactions students receive from friends when they prioritize sleep. The culture of college is to stay out late with activities, and spend time with friends at night. For students who make it a priority to go to sleep reasonably early, they feel guilty about missing that time with friends, and receive pressure from friends to stay up later. This becomes a pattern and eventually leads to a lack of sleep when it continues night after night. In order to fix the lack of sleep for college students, the pressure from activities and peers has to decrease. Additionally, reducing caffeine and other stimulants, such as blue light from technology, is a goal of ours because this is another major problem getting in the way of young adults getting enough sleep.

The Trend
Zee’s conducted a survey across several SLU college dorms to get a feel for different student opinions on sleep. What we found was a strong trend demonstrated in the responses of almost every student we surveyed. We discovered that college students are generally getting far less than the recommended amount of sleep. However, Zee’s also discovered that students truly desire to get enough sleep, but that schoolwork and stress keeps them from this goal. Zee’s will use this trend to our benefit; it shows us that if students are enabled, they will take advantage of a full 8 hours.
Hours of Sleep Per Night
The chart below shows the average amount of sleep our survey sample of college students get per night. A large portion of students are getting less than the recommended amount of sleep.

What Affects Sleep
The graph below shows what the respondents say influences their sleep most. It is clear that the influence of schoolwork seems to dominate sleep habits.
